SEPAC-October Disability Awareness Month

October is Disability Awareness Month, a time for our district to increase understanding, respect, and acceptance for people with disabilities. This month serves as a powerful reminder that diversity enriches our community and that every student, regardless of ability, can thrive and succeed. At PSD, we celebrate the unique talents and perspectives that students with disabilities bring to our schools, recognizing that inclusion benefits everyone.

Kristen, mother to Emma, shares about her daughter’s journey at Swift Water Elementary School, where Emma is part of the Options program. Emma has made incredible progress both academically and socially. Kristen reflects, “We’ve worked with some truly incredible teachers, specialists, and staff who have always gone above and beyond for Emma. The compassion, creativity, and support that her team provides have been life-changing for our family. My advice to other parents is simple: partner with the team—they are so special and so valuable!”

Emma’s story is a testament to the power of collaboration, highlighting how a dedicated team, when fully partnered with a family, can help students thrive in ways that go beyond the classroom. As we celebrate Disability Awareness Month, we honor families like Emma’s and the vital partnerships that ensure every student has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

The Peninsula School District Special Education Parent Advisory Committee (SEPAC) is proud to highlight the stories of students with disabilities. We believe that sharing these experiences can help destigmatize disabilities, foster greater understanding, and celebrate the unique strengths of every student. We invite families to share their journeys with us as we work together to raise awareness and create a more inclusive community.
