This month we celebrate National School Counselors week. A very big SHOUT OUT to Mrs. Nemecek and Mrs. Kjelstad who do an amazing job with our students.

With the start of a new semester, we have an opportunity to reset, refocus, and continue the great work happening at Goodman Middle School. The first half of the year was filled with growth, learning, and building connections, and I’m incredibly proud of how our students have shown resilience, curiosity, and kindness. As we step into this next phase, we remain committed to fostering an environment where every student feels supported and challenged to do their best.
This semester, we continue to emphasize student voice, academic growth, and a culture of belonging. Our WIN time remains a critical tool for helping students strengthen their self-advocacy, organization, and academic planning. We encourage families to check in regularly with their students, discuss goals, and celebrate progress. Thank you for your continued partnership—we are excited for what’s ahead!

Happy February!

Celebrating Our History during Black History Month
This February, we’re celebrating Black History Month by honoring the pioneers, leaders and changemakers who helped shape our society and Washington state. Throughout the month, we’ll be highlighting seven remarkable individuals whose dedication, perseverance, and vision made lasting impacts on our state. Follow PSD on Facebook and Instagram to learn more about these empowering individuals. From education to business, politics to civil rights, these leaders broke barriers and created opportunities that continue to influence our communities today. Join us as we celebrate their achievements and recognize the importance of Black history in shaping our shared story.

Black History MonthBlack History Month was created to focus attention on the contributions of African Americans to the United States. It honors all Black people from all periods of U.S. history, from the enslaved people first brought over from Africa in the early 17th century to African Americans living in the United States today.

This month we are celebrating Black History Month throughout our school in many of our classes and especially in the GMS Library. Please come by the GMS Library to check out the informative displays and available books to learn more!

In addition to what you see on display, here are some resources to check out from PBS highlighting the importance of Black History in our local community:

A Message From Science
Sixth grade Earth/Space Science students are finishing up their Plate Motion Engineering Internship where students design a tsunami warning system to protect the island nation of Sri Lanka. Students will use their knowledge of plate motion, plate boundaries, and earthquakes to design an effective, efficient, and affordable warning system. Later this month we will begin the Rock Transformations unit where students will work on answering the question "How do rocks form and change?"
7th grade Life Science students are wrapping up learning about Traits and Reproduction. Inside virtually every cell in every organism on Earth, genes provide instructions for making proteins that govern all the functions of an organism’s body. An organism inherits its genes from its parent or parents, but different combinations of genes can lead to striking variation even among closely related organisms. Understanding the role of genes and the process of inheritance has allowed researchers to explain variation in life on Earth, breed plants and animals with new traits, and develop cures for devastating diseases. We will be moving on to the next unit, Natural Selection, around Mid-Winter Break.
8th grade Physical Science students will explore phase changes by investigating the mystery of a methane lake on Titan, Saturn's moon, which disappeared between 2007 and 2009. Acting as chemists for a fictional space agency, they analyze whether the lake evaporated or froze using simulations, articles, and hands-on experiments. Through this, they learn how molecular movement, kinetic energy, and molecular attraction vary between phases and apply this understanding to explain the lake’s disappearance under Titan's unique conditions.

A Message for 6th Grade Language Arts
Celebrations will be held across the board for sixth-grade students this week. Mrs. Duncan and Mrs. Jarvis have been working alongside our Goodman Librarian Mrs. Nielsen to foster a love of reading. We are proud of the student ownership and collaboration that we have been seeing in Language Arts during Literature Circles time. Students have been working in small groups to

In these small groups, they’ve been reading and discussing a novel, exploring key themes like internal conflict and setting. They’ve focused on internal conflict, looking at how characters face tough choices and emotions, which helps them understand the story and characters better. They also studied the setting, considering how the time and place influence what happens in the story and how characters act.
Working in groups has encouraged students to share ideas, ask questions, and learn from each other, all while improving their critical thinking and communication skills.
Thank you for supporting your student’s learning journey!

The platform offers a user-friendly interface that helps students explore courses aligned with their interests and graduation requirements, while giving parents/guardians real-time insight into their student's academic planning.

Course registration opens on Feb. 10 and closes on March 14. SchooLinks is available for students to explore now in their PSD Portal (ClassLink).

Together, we're making course registration more accessible and planning for your student's future easier than ever.
