PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Hello Roadrunner Nation,

We’re excited to share that our students have just wrapped up the Fall IREADY reading and math diagnostic assessments. The next step in this journey is for our staff to work with students on setting meaningful goals based on this data.

Goal-setting is an essential skill for our middle schoolers, one that goes beyond academics. It helps build self-discipline, perseverance, and time management—traits that are invaluable in all areas of life. We encourage you to talk with your child about setting both short-term and long-term goals, whether it’s about academics, personal growth, or extracurricular activities. By setting clear goals, students gain a sense of direction, purpose, and pride in tracking their progress.

Your partnership in this process is key. With your support, we can empower our students to take ownership of their learning journey. At Goodman, we don’t just celebrate reaching the top, we celebrate the dedication, growth, and effort it takes to get there. Together, we’re preparing them for high school, college, and life beyond.

GO ROADRUNNERS!

CELEBRATING HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH AT PENINSULA SCHOOL DISTRICT

From September 15 to October 15, Peninsula School District proudly celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month. This month is a time to honor the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of the Hispanic and Latinx communities that have shaped and continue to enrich our country.

In an educational setting, embracing and celebrating diverse cultures fosters an inclusive environment where students and staff can learn from one another. We believe that cultural diversity strengthens our school community, promoting understanding, respect, and unity among all.

Did you know? Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15 to commemorate the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. This celebration also extends to Mexico’s independence on September 16 and Chile’s on September 18.

We invite you to join us in recognizing the incredible contributions of Hispanic and Latinx communities, as we celebrate the values of diversity and inclusion in our schools.

WE ARE AVID
alt_text

Staff at GMS use WICOR strategies to improve student learning and engagement. As in the previous year, all GMS students are expected to use their organized binder and planner/agenda daily to develop their organizational skills and take ownership of their learning. During WIN class, students also monitor their grades, missing assignments, test retakes, and action plans. Teachers incorporate research-based AVID learning strategies to enhance knowledge retention and mastery. If you have any questions about AVID schoolwide, feel free to reach out to our AVID Elective teacher, Mrs. Zamberlin, at zamberlinc@psd401.net. Additionally, each core subject has at least one AVID-trained teacher available to assist.

FREEDOM OF SPEECH

We know that this is the month when our community will be preparing for our next statewide/nationwide election.  We want our students to be civically aware and encourage them to be informed. Student's freedom of speech is protected speech as long as it does not create a disruption or violate another school policy. Students never have the right to use hate speech, demean another student's beliefs, or use political speech or expression of free speech to disrupt the learning environment. If you have a question about if something is allowed, please ask me. We want our school to be a safe learning environment for all students.

TRICK OR TREAT...and SWEET REWARDS! 🍬 A SPECIAL REQUEST

Dear Parents,

As you’re out gathering just the right  spooky treats for Halloween (you know, the candy that’ll make you a hero in the trick-or-treat circuit 🎃), we have a sweet favor to ask!

While you’re picking up your stash of Halloween goodies, could you think of us and maybe grab an extra bag or two of individually wrapped candy? 🍫🍬 We’d love to stock up on some sweet rewards for our students who are showing off their amazing behavior. Nothing motivates positive choices like a little treat!

So whether you’re grabbing chocolate, gummies, or something fun-sized and fabulous, your donation will make a difference in brightening up our students' day and encouraging their best behavior.

Drop off the candy at the office and know that each piece is helping build a kinder, more positive school environment (and maybe giving you a little extra space in your pantry!).

Thank you for helping us keep the “treat” in trick-or-treat!

NEWS FROM THE LIBRARY

Celebrate Reading!
This month we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with Latinx authors like Donna Barba Higuera, Matt de la Pena, Elizabeth Acevedo, Pam Munoz Ryan, Julia Alvarez, and so many more.
We are also heading into October by celebrating the American Library Association’s Freed Between the Lines event–also known as banned books week. Book challenges have seen an increase across our country in recent years and at the GMS library, we are doing our part to support our students’ freedom of choice. Some of the most challenged books include classics and student favorites like Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle and A Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Patterson.
Come and check out these authors this month!
Chromebook Reminders:
Please remember to charge your Chromebook every night so that it is ready for learning the next day. The Library only has a limited number of devices to loan out and we try to reserve those for students who need to send their Chromebook in for repairs. Daily Loaners must be returned at the end of the day they are checked out to the GMS Library or to the Main Office.
And be extra careful carrying your Chromebook through the halls. Using your Chromebook case is a great way to protect your device!
Thanks for being so responsible, Roadrunners!

Coming Soon!

This year the VPO will be working with Scholastic Books to host a BOOK FAIR right here on campus in the GMS Library during our Conferences week (November 4-8). Be on the lookout for your next great read, Roadrunner Community!

CAREER & TECHNICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM

Are you someone who specializes in the medical field or the aerospace industry and enjoys inspiring kids?  As part of our Career & Technical Education program, we are looking for guest speakers to come and share with students what they do on a day-to-day basis in their careers.  70% of people choose a career because of someone they have had an interaction with in that field, so you can make a big difference here.  Contact Tamar Mar at mart@psd401.net if you’d like to volunteer as a guest speaker.  It would only be for one period, once a quarter, and you don’t even have to commit to multiple appearances.  Thank you for considering!
